Accreditation

What Is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a comprehensive review of the quality of universities, educational institutes, vocational institutions, colleges, schools, distance learning centers, lifelong learning centers, online courses, corporations, agencies, professionals, and instructors.

Worldwide, accreditation is a primary way for students, families, government officials, and the media to determine whether an institution or program provides quality education. Accreditation may be institutional or programmatic, and it is a voluntary, objective, and comprehensive process of external peer review. This process evaluates whether an institution or program meets the standards of the accrediting body in terms of educational quality and effectiveness.

ACHEC provides institutional accreditation for its members.

Why Accreditation Matters

Accreditation status is important for several reasons:

  • Students seeking government grants, loans, or financial aid must attend an accredited university, college, school, distance learning center, online course, or program.
  • Employers often require accreditation before offering tuition assistance, evaluating academic credentials, or making charitable contributions.
  • Governments require institutions or programs to be accredited to qualify for grants, loans, and other public funding.
  • In some professional fields, accreditation is required for students to be eligible to sit for government licensure examinations.

What Is Accredited?

Accreditation can apply to:

  • Universities and colleges
  • Educational and vocational institutions
  • Schools and lifelong learning centers
  • Distance learning and online education providers
  • Corporations, agencies, professionals, and instructors

Around the world, institutions are accredited by hundreds of international accrediting organizations, while specific programs are accredited by specialized programmatic accrediting bodies.

The ACHEC database contains information on thousands of accredited institutions and programs worldwide, along with links to their official websites. Users may search by institution name or by country through the ACHEC Accredited Members Directory.

Why Is Accreditation Important Globally?

Accreditation assures the public—especially prospective students—that an education provider meets recognized global quality standards. Students often feel uncertain when evaluating foreign institutions, as quality benchmarks vary from country to country. ACHEC provides a global quality assurance reference, free from local regulatory constraints or cultural idiosyncrasies.

Traditional listings, such as those from the International Association of Universities (IAU), are often limited to institutions recognized by national ministries of education. This leaves out many innovative institutions, alternative educational models, and programs responding to modern global demands. ACHEC accreditation serves as an effective way to recognize and endorse such initiatives.

In a global education market, accreditation takes many forms. Rather than focusing solely on who accredits an institution, the key question becomes: What level and type of accreditation best serves an institution’s global mission?

Types of Accreditation

Full Accreditation

Applies to universities, colleges, vocational institutions, schools, corporations, and similar entities using traditional education methods. Full Accreditation evaluates the institution as a whole, including administration, governance, financial stability, educational systems, and student services. It does not include individual programs or degrees.

Online Accreditation

Designed for open universities, distance learning centers, lifelong learning centers, and online education providers. This accreditation evaluates institutional operations and quality systems but does not include individual programs or degrees.

Program Accreditation

Available only to institutions that already hold Full or Online Accreditation. Program Accreditation applies to specific academic programs or courses (e.g., MA, MS, MBA, LLM, DBA) with defined curricula.

Important Notice:
Full or Online Accreditation does not include program curricula. Institutions seeking accreditation for individual programs must apply separately for Program Accreditation.

Accreditation Application Process

ACHEC has established itself as a credible international accreditation agency through a transparent and unbiased evaluation process. Accreditation is awarded based on educational quality, regardless of geographic location or financial standing.

The process consists of three steps:

Step 1:
Institutions submit an application online or offline and receive a free consultation from an ACHEC Secretariat representative. After initial review, eligible applicants proceed to the next step.

Step 2:
ACHEC conducts an institutional visit or virtual evaluation to assess facilities, faculty, academic standards, and operational quality.

Step 3:
The evaluation report is reviewed by the ACHEC Commission. Upon approval, the institution is granted Full Accreditation, Online Accreditation, or Program Accreditation, as applicable.

About ACHEC Accreditation Status

Not a Substitute for Legal Authorization

ACHEC accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental peer review process. It confirms that an institution meets ACHEC’s educational quality standards but does not replace local legal authorization, government recognition, or regulatory approval.

Institutional Scope

ACHEC accreditation evaluates institutions as complete entities or specific programs. It does not grant professional licensure and may not substitute for government-required approvals.

Global and International Perspective

ACHEC evaluates educational quality from a global standpoint, respecting institutional autonomy and cultural diversity. ACHEC operates independently of national governments and follows a non-discriminatory policy. Academic mobility and credit transferability remain subject to the policies of receiving institutions or countries.
